I am so blessed in my career as a coach. It is a passion that burns strong in my heart and this is why:
I have the honour of hearing people stories and truly listening to what matters to them and how their struggles impact their lives. I also have the incredible honour of my clients trust. This trust continuously feeds my soul and reminds me of just how incredible humanity in fact is. This humanity can sometimes get lost in the hectic and fast paced lives that we now live, and we can easily let this pass us by or take it for granted.
I notice this every day as I walk my own story, and being privileged to others stories I am continuously reminded of the journey that we are all on. This leaves me with an endless curiosity for learning and listening, and in the same breath being able to acknowledge that we only learn when we are listening. The more we know, the more we want to know. Learning is knowledge and knowledge gives us the power of choice.
I was recently reminded of this when a friend was curious about something that had happened, and this curiosity led to a level of uncertainty as the information learned simply posed more questions that gave no absolutes. The questions could not be answered, due to the thousands of variables that the situation held led to uncertainty and the uncertainty caused a sense of vulnerability. Brene Brown writes that;
“Choosing to be curious is choosing to be vulnerable because it requires us to surrender to uncertainty. "
She also writes that vulnerability is the most courageous aspect of human nature because we are showing up to be seen and that “Curiosity is an act of vulnerability and courage.”
This is an aspect of my job that I work with every, day, and every day I learn more about the people in my life and myself. This learning is an awesome generous stream of giving that leads to ever more curiosity and increased inquisitiveness about the complexity of our lives.
I love the courage my clients bring to our sessions, and I love how this continuously feeds the inspiration for more knowledge and understanding.
Coaching has given me so much in my world. I am privileged and honoured to be part of my clients' worlds, and for this I am truly grateful.
Whatever we do, let’s bring that courage to be vulnerable and allow ourselves the time to be curious about ourselves, our emotions and why we respond to things the way we do. It can only lead to creating better worlds for ourselves and for the people in them.
